Block puzzle is the simple, satisfying game of fitting shapes onto a grid and watching full lines vanish. On PlayToffee you can play block puzzle free in your browser: drag pieces from a tray of three onto an 8x8 board, clear complete rows and columns, and chain clears into combos for big scores. There is no timer, no download, and no sign-up, just a calm puzzle that gets more tense the fuller the board becomes.

What is Block Puzzle?

Block puzzle is a placement game. You are given three pieces at a time, built from square blocks in shapes such as single blocks, straight lines, squares, corners, and L, T, S, and Z shapes. Your job is to place each piece somewhere on the 8x8 board. Whenever a row or a column is completely filled, it clears, freeing up space for more pieces.

Nothing falls and nothing is timed. You can take as long as you like over each move. The pressure comes from space: pieces cannot be rotated, so every shape has to fit exactly as it arrives, and big pieces like the 3x3 square or the five-block lines need a lot of open room. The game ends when none of the pieces left in your tray can be placed anywhere.

Reach 1,000 points and the game counts as a win, though you can keep going for as long as pieces still fit. Want the same pieces as everyone else today? Try Daily Block Puzzle.

How to Play Block Puzzle

  1. Look at the tray. Three pieces sit beside or below the board. Any piece that cannot fit anywhere right now is greyed out.
  2. Drag a piece onto the board. Pick a piece up with your mouse or finger and move it over the grid. A shadow shows exactly where it will land.
  3. Watch for glowing lines. If the drop would complete a row or column, those cells light up before you let go.
  4. Release to place it. The piece snaps into place. If it does not fit where you dropped it, it simply returns to the tray.
  5. Clear rows and columns. Every full row and every full column clears at the same time, and the blocks in them disappear.
  6. Get three new pieces. Once all three pieces in the tray have been placed, a fresh set of three arrives.
  7. Keep going until you are stuck. The game ends when no remaining tray piece fits on the board. Your score, lines cleared, and pieces placed are shown at the end.

Tips & Strategies

  1. Keep space for the big pieces. The 3x3 square and the five-block lines are the pieces that end most games. Try to keep at least one open 3x3 area and one long empty row or column.
  2. Fill edges and corners first. Placing pieces along the walls keeps the middle open, where awkward shapes have the most options.
  3. Avoid single-block holes. A lone empty cell surrounded by blocks can only be filled by a single block. A board full of holes is a board that is about to end the game.
  4. Look at all three pieces before you move. The order you place them matters. Put down the piece that is hardest to fit while there is still room for it, and keep flexible pieces for last.
  5. Aim for multi-line clears. Clearing two lines at once scores 60, three lines 120, and four lines 200. Building up several nearly full rows and finishing them together pays far better than clearing them one by one.
  6. Use crosses. A single piece can complete a row and a column at the same time. Both count toward the multi-line bonus.
  7. Keep your combo alive. Every clearing placement adds to your combo, and the combo survives two placements without a clear. Try to clear something at least every third piece.

Scoring, Combos and Fair Trays

Points come from three places on every placement:

  • +1 per block in the piece you place
  • +10 × L × (L + 1) when you clear L lines at once: 20 for one line, 60 for two, 120 for three, 200 for four, and more beyond that
  • +30 × (combo − 1) when you clear on back-to-back clearing placements

Your combo goes up by one each time a placement clears at least one line. It is forgiving: you can make two placements without clearing and the combo stays alive, but the third placement in a row without a clear resets it. That makes long combos very valuable, since the fifth clear in a combo earns an extra 120 points on top of its line bonus.

The pieces are drawn at random, with small, flexible shapes appearing more often than big, awkward ones. To keep things fair, if a brand-new tray would contain no piece that fits the board at all, it is re-rolled so you get at least one playable piece whenever possible. That only applies to a fresh tray, though. Planning ahead is still up to you.

The HUD shows your best score so far, and the game cheers when you pass 1,000 points. Your stats record games played, wins (games that reach 1,000), high score, and streaks.

Block Puzzle FAQ

How do you play block puzzle?

Drag the three pieces from the tray onto the 8x8 board. Fill a whole row or column and it clears. When all three pieces are placed you get three new ones, and the game ends when none of the pieces left in the tray fits.

Can I rotate the pieces?

No. Pieces always keep the orientation they arrive in, which is a big part of the challenge. Shapes such as L pieces and corners appear in several different orientations instead.

How does scoring work?

You get 1 point per block placed. Clearing lines adds 10 × L × (L + 1) for L lines cleared at once, so 1 line is 20, 2 lines 60, 3 lines 120, and 4 lines 200. Back-to-back clears build a combo worth an extra 30 points per step.

What counts as a win in block puzzle?

There is no final level. Every game runs until no piece fits, and any game that reaches 1,000 points counts as a win in your stats.

Is there a daily block puzzle?

Yes. Daily Block Puzzle gives every player the same pieces each UTC day, with one attempt and a streak for reaching 1,000 points.

Will I lose my game if I close the tab?

No. The board, tray, and score are saved after every placement, so you can come back later on the same device and browser and carry on.
