Solitaire is the card game almost everyone has played at least once: one deck, seven columns, and the quiet goal of sorting every card home from Ace to King. On PlayToffee you can play classic Klondike solitaire free in your browser, turning one card at a time from the stock, with unlimited redeals, undo, hints, and autosave. Every deal is checked by a solver before it reaches you, so you spend your time playing rather than fighting hopeless layouts.

What is Klondike Solitaire?

Klondike is the version of solitaire most people picture when they hear the name. A standard 52-card deck is dealt into seven tableau columns. The first column holds one card, the second holds two, and so on up to seven, with only the top card of each column face up. The remaining 24 cards form the stock in the top-left corner.

Your goal is to build four foundations, one for each suit, from Ace up to King. To get there you rearrange the tableau, uncover face-down cards, and pull cards from the stock when the table runs dry. It is a game of patience with a real layer of planning: the order in which you uncover cards matters, and a careless move early on can block a column for the rest of the game.

This page plays the gentlest form of Klondike, turning one card at a time with no limit on passes through the stock. If you want a tougher test, Solitaire Turn 3 flips three cards at once, and Pyramid Solitaire swaps building for pairing cards that add up to 13.

How to Play Solitaire

  1. Read the table. The stock sits at the top left with the waste pile beside it. The four foundation spaces are at the top right, and the seven tableau columns fill the rest of the table.
  2. Build down in alternating colours. In the tableau, you can place a card on another card one rank higher and of the opposite colour, such as a red 9 on a black 10.
  3. Move whole runs. Any face-up card in a column can be moved together with all the cards stacked on top of it, as long as the bottom card of the run fits its new spot.
  4. Fill empty columns with Kings. When a column is cleared, only a King (with any run on it) can go there.
  5. Turn over hidden cards. When you move the last face-up card off a column, the card below flips over automatically.
  6. Draw from the stock. Tap the stock to turn one card onto the waste. The top waste card can be played to the tableau or a foundation. When the stock is empty, tap it again to recycle the waste, as many times as you like.
  7. Build the foundations. Send each Ace to a foundation, then add the 2, 3, and so on of the same suit until all four piles reach the King.
  8. Let it finish. Once the stock and waste are empty and every tableau card is face up, the game plays the remaining cards home for you.

A single tap tries the foundation first. If the card cannot go home, it moves to the best spot in the tableau, preferring a column that already has cards over an empty one.

Tips & Strategies

  1. Uncover face-down cards first. The hidden cards in the tableau are what really block a game. Given a choice, make the move that turns over a new card, and favour the longest columns, since they hide the most.
  2. Do not rush cards to the foundations. Sending a low card home is usually safe, but a 5 or 6 may still be needed as a place to park a 4 or 5 of the other colour. Keep it on the table while it is still useful.
  3. Empty a column only when a King is waiting. An empty column helps only if you have a King, ideally with cards beneath it, ready to move in. Clearing one with no King in sight just wastes moves.
  4. Choose your King carefully. If two Kings could fill an empty column, pick the one whose move uncovers more hidden cards or frees the cards you need next.
  5. Play from the tableau before the stock. Exhaust the moves on the table before turning another card. Every stock card you play changes what comes up next.
  6. Keep redeals in mind. Unlimited passes mean no deal is lost to an unlucky stock order, but each recycle costs 100 points. If you care about score, plan a little before you flip.
  7. Use Undo to explore. Undo has a deep history, so you can test a line of play and step back if it leads nowhere.
  8. Ask for a hint when stuck. The hint highlights a useful move, or the stock if drawing is the best option. If nothing useful is left, it tells you so, and you can undo or start a new deal.

Turn One Card Klondike and Scoring

This page uses the turn-one rules: each tap on the stock moves a single card to the waste, so every card in the stock can be reached on every pass. That makes it the most forgiving form of Klondike and a great place to learn.

Scoring follows the classic desktop scheme. You earn +5 for moving a card from the waste to the tableau, +10 for every card placed on a foundation, and +5 each time a face-down card is turned over. Pulling a card back off a foundation costs −15, and each recycle of the waste costs −100. The score never goes below zero. When you win, games that took 30 seconds or longer earn a time bonus of 700,000 divided by your time in seconds, so a quick, clean game scores far higher than a slow one.

Each deal is generated from a shuffled deck and then checked by a solver that searches for a winning line. If it cannot find one, a fresh deal is tried. That means nearly every game you play can be won, although the solver works within a fixed search budget, so it is not a hard guarantee.

Want more solitaire? For a sharper challenge, try Solitaire Turn 3, where three cards are turned at once and only the top one is playable. For a different kind of puzzle, Pyramid Solitaire asks you to clear a pyramid of 28 cards by pairing ranks that add up to 13. You can find every deck-based game in our card games collection.

Solitaire FAQ

Is every solitaire deal winnable?

Not every possible Klondike deal can be won, but ours are checked by a solver before you see them, so almost every deal you get on PlayToffee can be won with the right moves.

How many times can I go through the stock?

As many times as you like. When the stock runs out, tap the empty stock to turn the waste back over. Each recycle costs 100 points in this turn-one mode, so redeals are free in moves but not in score.

How is solitaire scored?

You earn 5 points for moving a card from the waste to the tableau, 10 for each card sent to a foundation, and 5 for turning over a face-down card. Moving a card back off a foundation costs 15, and each recycle costs 100. The score never drops below zero, and wins of 30 seconds or longer add a time bonus of 700,000 divided by your time in seconds.

What is the difference between Turn 1 and Turn 3 solitaire?

This page turns one card from the stock at a time, so every card is easy to reach. Solitaire Turn 3 flips three at once and only the top one is playable, which makes planning harder.

Can I play solitaire online for free without downloading anything?

Yes. Solitaire on PlayToffee runs in your browser on phones, tablets, and computers. There is nothing to install and no account to create.

Will I lose my game if I close the tab?

No. Your deal autosaves after every move, so you can refresh or close the page and continue later on the same device and browser.
